Crime Alert! (Item posted on 7/13/05)
Crime Prevention Bulletin
Investigative Services
Brighton Police DepartmentResidential Burglary Pattern
The Brighton Police Department is currently investigating a crime pattern consisting of nighttime burglaries of occupied homes. Incidents are occurring after dark and in the early morning hours, in several Brighton neighborhoods as well as other bordering towns.
These burglaries appear to be related to the same suspect. Entry is being made through unlocked doors or by removing/cutting screens on open windows. Items such as purses, wallets, and small, electronic equipment are being stolen. In some cases the purses or wallets are located in the vicinity of the home after just the cash has been removed.
A suspect has been identified by fingerprint in a similar incident and is presently being sought by law enforcement. The suspect has been known to travel by bicycle and vehicle, parking on side streets and walking through yards.
Please remember these basic Crime Prevention Tips:
Keep your doors locked and first floor windows secured
Consider exterior lighting or motion detector illumination
Keep valuables such as wallets, purses, laptop’s, mini-camcorders, out of plain view from doors and windows
Know your surroundings and call 911 to report suspicious conditions or persons
Any further questions or investigative information, contact Sgt. John Mallaber at 784-5111.
Annual Night Out Against Crime (Item posted on 7/08/05)
The Brighton Police Department will hold its annual celebration "Night Out Against Crime" on Tuesday August 2, from 6-9 p.m. in the park behind the Town Hall. The evening will feature free hot dogs, drinks and ice cream, as well as police and emergency displays (including the K-9 team and home security) which are of interest to all ages. For young swimmers, the adjacent town pool will be open until 9 p.m.
Save the date for this fun family event.
2005 Strawberry Festival (Item posted on 6/16/05)
Over 90 neighbors attended the Strawberry Festival on Sunday, June 12. Our appreciation goes out to the Clarinet Collection, which again provided lively music (despite the humidity and puddles) and to the Girl Scouts who painted the faces of the many excited children attending the event. Watch for photos from the festival on this website!
Special thanks to Christie Sunderrajan, who did a fantastic job coordinating volunteers, food and supplies for this event. This was her first year coordinating this event! Thanks to all who volunteered.
Lost Cat Alert (Thurs., 6/16/05) (Item posted on 6/16/05)
Please be on the lookout for Terry, a gray male cat lost near the corner of Mayflower and Warrington. Terry is an indoor cat, and has no collar. He is not quite a year old. Terry is gray, with white paws and stomach and a white stripe on his nose. He has long whiskers and a bushy, squirrel like tail. If you find Terry, please contact Marette Berkowitz at 414-3858.
Perennial Swap: May 1 (Item posted on 5/01/05)
This weekend's perennial swap was a great success. Thanks to Mary Jo Conrad Reingold and Audrey Fernandez for organizing this event again this year. More information about this year's swap and future plans will follow in the newsletter.
2005 Garage Sale (Item posted on 5/01/05)
June 2005 will see the bi-annual lawn sale in Bel-Air Neighborhood. The sale will be June 10, 11 and 12.
This year, Bel-Air will be joining with Roselawn and Home Acres Neighborhood Associations in a lawn sale which could potentially involve 1000 homes! The joint effort will help reduce advertising costs for all three neighborhood associations and draw more customers to the area. Unlike past years, Bel-Air residents will be able to participate in the sale without paying any fees to defray the cost of the advertising.
A flier will be distributed in May with more details! Please watch for it!
Streetlight Problems (Item posted on 2/12/05)
You may have noticed this winter entire blocks of street lights out in Bel-Air. RGE engineers informed the coordinator that there was a lost feeder in the electrical substation located near Chase Bank on Monroe Avenue. To repair the damage, sections of the primary cable had to be replaced, requiring excavation of sections of ground between the sidewalk and the street on Monroe Avenue, during the worst weather this winter. As a result, streetlights stayed dark much longer than RGE had planned in both Roselawn and Bel-Air subdivisions.
Bel-Air and Roselawn neighborhoods both have serial lighting, with fixtures that are now designated as historical landmarks. With serial lights, if one post has a problem, other lights in the circuit will also be out, unless the problem is only a defective bulb. Recently, plows have hit the lampposts, causing outages in entire circuits. Inclement weather has also caused repairs to take longer than expected. In addition, RGE contracts with an outside company to replace defective bulbs, which at times may delay the replacement of bulbs.
Residents noticing darkened lampposts or blocks should notify RGE at 546-1111, giving the address of the house closest to the affected lamppost, or the blocks affected on with specific streets and cross streets. Please call them promptly when you notice these outages, to maximize safety of pedestrians in our neighborhood. Barb Bethany, the RGE dispatcher familiar with Bel-Air's concerns, can be reached at 724-8450 if you have questions staff at the main number cannot answer.

As of March 2004, we now have 143 families as members in the Bel-Air Neighborhood Association, double our 2001 membership. The increased membership has made possible this website and neighborhood-wide distribution of the Bel-Air Directory, to all 435 homes in our subdivision. Watch for a membership flier this spring, with the announcement for the June Strawberry Festival.
